Norden

Information in English
Who are we?
The Danish Scholastic Chess Federation is a children- and youth organization working to create committed citizens. The organization was founded in 1960. We believe that scholastic chess strengthens the intellectual and social development of children and youth. Chess develops concentration, independence and analytical abilities, which are essential in school life as well as in life at large! We organize chess for children at schools throughout Denmark. At the moment there are approximately 4.000 children playing at 150 schools.
Why exchange and cooperation?
We want to make an exchange programme in order to increase the intercultural understanding between Danish youth and youth from different countries. By using chess as the media we wish to create an understanding of each others cultures and ways of life. Playing chess requires no specific language abilities and it is suitable for everyone regardless of age, gender and geography.
Danish Ambassador in Syria, Ole Egbjerg Mikkelsen:
“…chess is an excellent way of creating understanding and bridges across cultures. And that is exactly what is needed in today’s world. We need to build as many bridges as possible that can withstand the turbulence that occurs now and then in a globalized world. We need those bridges at all levels, both at the official level and at the grass root level. I am convinced that this event will provide us with yet another bridge that will help to create mutual understanding between Syrians and Danes”.
Partnerorganizations
We would like to cooperate with one or more chess organizations that also have children and youth as a target group. In 2008 and 2009 we cooperated with Syrian Arab Chess Federation (SACF), but we look out for more national, regional or local organizations.
Who, what and when?
Our target group is between 12 and 18 years old, but if your players are younger or older than this, is it also possible. We want to do the exchange during the Danish school summer vacation – in July or August. We consider five, six or seven days to be an appropriate period for a visit. We are not set on a specific week, as we would like to plan the details with our partnerorganization.
Our delegation will consist of approximately 8-12 young players from 12 to 18 years old accompanied by 3-5 adults – all in all 11-17 people. We envisage that the week schedule will consist of a mixture of workshops, family visits, chess tournament(s) as well as other cultural experiences, for instance visits to historical locations.
This is just a proposal, which can be adjusted to any wishes, opportunities, and ideas you may have.
If you find our ideas interesting, we would like to hear from you. Please feel free to contact Mette Weiss, The Danish Scholastic Chess Federation (DSCF), e-mail: mette@skoleskak.dk or please call mobile: +45 3025 3531.
